The Borki train disaster occurred on October 29, 1888, in Borki, Russia (now Ukraine) when two trains collided head-on. It is considered one of the most deadly train accidents in history, with an estimated death toll of around 200 people, including Tsar Alexander III's wife Marie Feodorovna's younger sister Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna of Russia. The accident was caused by a miscommunication between the dispatchers, resulting in two trains traveling towards each other on the same track. The tragedy led to improvements in railway communication and safety measures in Russia, and a national day of mourning was declared.
